I found The Firm of The Future to be incredibly inspiring. When I discussed it with some managing partners, they quickly dismissed the need to make these kinds of changes. That was before Sept 08. Now, business development skills are a must, not just a nice idea.
Every avenue to cultivate and preserve relationships with prospects and clients is under heavy consideration.

The need was always there, the attention was not.

I would love to feature a blog written by an accountant (such as yours) on a new online community I'll be launching soon, bringing lawyers, accountants and bankers together. If there is interest, please write to me at the designated email address, nfox@bizdevsuccess.com.

Excellent observations! It seems that focusing on infinitely improving efficiency (a reduction of unneccessary cost approach) will drive your staff into an early grave whereas the focus on effectiveness is really more related to increasing revenue as a means to increased profits. There is only so much that can be done to minimize costs, even to the point of self-detriment, and not enough consideration is usually given to more creative ways to grow revenue.
