In the years since I began practicing, our profession has changed radically.  I do not want to sound like my parents and grandparents who lamented the passing of the nickel candy bar, 1 cent stamps, and walking to and from school ( up hill, both ways in the snow of Southern California), but are we progressing or regressing in terms of advancing the profession of public accounting and making it an attractive career?  What are the underlying currents that influence or even drive change? In a post by Rita Keller on CPA Management she advocates the practice of publishing rankings of the firms associates. It would seem this is a practice of Moss Adams, a large national firm. The post titled Ranking Your Individual Team Members doesn’t provide specifics as to what the criteria that were used in the ranking scheme by Moss Adams. They state that you should rank people by the criteria that are important to your firm. The article goes on to state that the staff felt it was a positive motivator and “no one quit”. (Yet!) The most recent Beta Alpha Psi conference occurred this past weekend in Los Angeles, California. The topics were very similar to prior years; Work/Life Balance, Your First Year in Public Accounting, and From Student to Professional.
